How to be funny? The truth is it's how to be funnier. Most people know how to be funny, making people smile is part of everyday interaction for most. Nearly everybody can recall at least one instance of making friends bust out laughing at some spontaneous remark or action, leaving everyone to believe comedy is so easy.
A stark realism soon grasped in studying stand up however is when it comes to performing, comedy is a whole other thingy.
It's talent, it's obsessively honed skills, it's psychology, it's a LOT about listening, it's courageous experimentation and dogged repetition. If along the way (at any time along the way) you can get some enlightened criticism and objective feedback you begin to better...YOU 'get funnier'. Your performance begins to exceed your jokes and that's a good thing. It took me a while to realize that comedy is as much about YOU as it is the punch lines.
It's also about how YOU reproduce YOUR thoughts and present YOUR funny self.
“Say funny things but by all means say things funny.”
Successful stand up is not necessarily being everything to everybody, it's picking out that thing in YOU that is special yet translatable to everybody. Not that everybody will ever get it, but YOU do what YOU can. ;)
Discovering YOUR 'world' (character/voice) is a huge boost to the flow of YOUR writing no question.
Get it? YOU are one of a kind. YOU need to be writing about YOU. How does the world and YOU get along? What do YOU think? YOU rule so find out who YOU are. YOU need to do that.
