TYPES OF COMEDY & A SECRET TO BUSTIN' THRU A WRITERS BLOCK

Posted on September 1, 2013 at 12:24 PM Comments comments (1)
I'm so freakin' lucky! Nature instilled in me a love for all types of comedy. I fully access and am in tune with it all, not to mention totally am thrilled to see it done justice by skilled comedic artists.

Nothing funnier to me than; awkwardness/misunderstanding, stupidity, yes even cruelty or misfortune that isn't ugly.....big laughs.

Slapstick can bring tears to my eyes!

Sarcastic remarks/satire, so needed but requires considerable intelligence. Anybody can write cutting cruel remarks...I'm talking about those expressions that capture a story AND then perhaps the cut down.

You gotta have parody and wordplay...those are just naturally funny and at the right moments...killer! Mimics and twisted words? Get out of here... hysterical!

Exaggeration, surreal, as well as types of conflict where the ivory tower guy/gal gets it...and then gets it rubbed in!! -Funny!!

Think like this, all of the above types of comedy are like humor tools! They are all seperate ways you can come at a  topic to find the funny in it for your stand up. That's why it's difficult for me to believe when somebody says they have writer's block. Really?!! You may only be blocked one way. It should be obvious that your comedy brain has more than one avenue. And remember in comedy it's not just about writing...you're looking for ideas...ways to make the funny images appear in your head so you can capture them.

The next time you think you're stuck on a topic...just relax, have some fun and remember you don't have to come at a subject in just one way. Throw a few of these types of comedy up against the old topic wall and see what bounces back. It works like comedy magic. ;)
