STAND-UP COMEDY HAS NOTHING BUT TIME

Posted on August 13, 2013 at 5:51 PM Comments comments (2)
Stand-up comedy is a big business of time. From the very first open mic
you will be asked to do 5 mins or less of time. You will have to know that time and not exceed that time or you will not be asked back for another time.
Opening acts are always asked to watch their time especially if there are multiple shows that have to get off on time. MC;'s usually get 10 mins of time, feature acts 25-30 mins of time and headliners are often asked to do 45 mins to 1 hr + of time. In some shows there is a guest spot that may do 5-10 mins of time as well.
Venues expect for you to show up on time or ahead of time and many times ask you not to exceed your time. There are arrival times and actual show times you will have to know and heed.
You will often be asked by bookers/agents as to how much time you have. Meaning how much time can you stand on stage and deliver solid funny material. Some shows may require you have a X amount of time on certain subjects.
Stand-up sets for television are often timed in the 4 minute range.
So for the last time comedy is a big business of knowing your time.
Here's my tip... buy a watch with a stopwatch function and use it. It can be a huge assist to your career.
Timely advice huh?
