SETUP-PUNCH LINE FORMULA HELPS BUILD A JOKE.

Having trouble turning your ideas/premises into jokes???
One of the easy ways is to simplify everything. Don't exclude the ol' SETUP-PUNCHLINE method.
~
(A basic joke is an INTRO, explaining what your topic is.
This is called the SETUP -keep as short as possible. Such as....)

MY NEW GIRLFRIEND

(Now that you've introduced your topic set audience up with a line that sounds like you're saying something sweet).

I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF HER.
SHE'S BEAUTIFUL, SHE SEXY, SHE'S RICH...

(-turn on the smart ass and twist on audience...)
.
...SHE'S IMAGINARY!

*Try using this simple formula to get the ball rolling for you! It still works for me. I write a simple joke and then when I have a punch line of some sort to work with...I can reword it, complicate it, expand it, etc. etc.
Once you have the blue print of the joke along with a punch line you can always change it up, or put it together with another joke in a similar theme to begin building bits.

STAND-UP, WHAT IT IS, REALIZATIONS & STUFF.

Sometimes it's about the challenge, the difficulty, the impossibility of it all. It's about providing for yourself an opportunity to do something nobody has ever done before. It's about being the first to say or express something and realizing that it is an immense responsibility with an awesome payoff. A roar of laughter from a crowd...the applause... the appreciation, affection and adulation, no question a very addictive process. A process that keeps you even through the nights where something goes wrong, the audience doesn't give you what you need or you were simply off your game.

Perhaps a realization has set in?... in that it's all temporary and it's all part of what you have to do. Each show you have to earn it and that is the way it is.
It is getting to the point where you can say,
'I don't just do standup'...I AM standup! ;)*

*I am reminded of my bud Jordan Brady's film "I Am Comic"! If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it!

7 POINTS TO CONSIDER FOR WRITING AND COMEDY.

.If you're vulnerable people will listen to you.
If you're hopelessly vulnerable people will laugh with you.

A riveting, powerful vulnerability, ...now that's performing!

You must be compelling. Otherwise your audience loses confidence in you.

An audience's confidence is fragile, don't take it for granted.
Build the audience's faith in you and then reap the laughs!

Comedy is a collision of your world and others.

Humans were given a brain for the sole purpose of becoming educated. It is our best defense from extinction.

Going over the audience's heads doesn't necessarily mean it's a smart joke. A truly smart joke is one people get!
