I get asked all the time how to get better at stand up comedy. Here's an answer in as few words I can muster...and you're probably not going to want to hear it.
First, you have to have some measure of talent for stand up, not everybody does, recognizing that in itself doesn't guarantee anything. Next you have to be prepared to work on your act, for hours... everyday, every waking moment if you have it. Write down ideas obsessively, search your soul and get to know yourself... everyday! Ask yourself a million questions, get all Scientology on yourself. (except for all that alien stuff)
Dig in, feel and write. Everyday. Write for others, write jokes for friends or online outlets but write...everyday...for hours if you can. Post funny, snarky Facebook posts and tweet some smack on Twitter. Write write write ...everyday, every single day. Feel terrible if you don't...because you are terrible if you don't. You're holding yourself back.
Get on stage as often as you can and use the stage time correctly, try new jokes, try new attitudes, push yourself to experiment. Seek feedback if you can get it from competent sources.
When you're not on stage or directly writing then you should be involved in stand up comedy via watching stand up on Youtube, DVD's, TV or live if you can. You learn so much more from watching other talented comics live.
Enough time spent doing this you might begin to get to another level. But don't lie to yourself, if you're not spending an extraordinary amount of time on your material and your act, you're not really working hard enough to get to the next level.
Still want to be a comedian? Remember you have to work even harder on the next levels.
*Before you lay out 100's of $$$ for expensive comedy classes or formula joke magic guides on websites or even costly books. Try my workshops (the dojo) They're priced per session and you can take as few or as many as you want if they're helping...and they will! Beginner or experienced welcomed. Don't pay big upfront money, make these so called comedy gurus put up or shut up!
I can even help through emails. Give it a shot, you'll be happy you did and funnier too! ;)
