I've
always said that a great way to help you learn stand up comedy is to
watch other comedians that have a mastery of it. Having said that I'd
really like for you to observe one of my new favs, Tom Papa. There
are so many aspects to what he's doing on stage it's like a clinic of
how to's. Energy,
consistent inviting comedic voice (big
one! often not utilized by newer comics), tone,
pace, movement, faces, material that relates to him and audience,
sensitivity to the topics...and many many little things that mean
soooo much. You
would do yourself well to watch one of his specials or Youtube him
and sit down and study. Pick out the elements you see him use (both
natural and learned I'm sure). Then
hit rewind and watch again and again, things will start to show up
you missed the first time I know. And
though this is not a plug for clean comedy but do you notice
something? He's pretty clean, he performs sexual material that is so
well translated in picking out the funny moment and image everybody
is comfortable to laugh WITH....not at....WITH, there's a difference.
I call it shared elements in performing. He does it more than
justice. Do
your enjoyment and study of stand up comedy a favor and watch Tom
Papa. You'll laugh, you'll think, and I'm bettin' you'll learn
something. Let me know. |
