Stand up comedy is full of talents wanting to move up. MC's want to feature, features want to headline, headliners want to get TV, power management...so on and so forth. So blah blah blah, what do you do?
The answer is simple but yet...not so. Well before attempting to gain the attention of somebody that can do you some good at a festival or audition of any type you need to have a product (show/material/character) that is not only funny but newer, fresher, energized and has a life of it's own. What does that mean? You have to be defined, know your strengths and put them on display, make all those personal things work for you.
Audiences want a comic to take them out of their comfort zones but yet give them a safe place to land. Your character can give them that (if you know what I mean)
Perform stand up that stands out. ;)
Not only do you have to strive for professionalism and gain experience in your skill sets, you have to strive to be unique. You have to bring something to your show that is compelling to an audience so that you begin to gain real fans... but never forgetting to bring the FUNNY!
'Say funny things but for gosh sakes say things funny' (old sayin')
Simply funny makes up for a lot, but when funny meets a honed consistent character along with passionate attitude jokes get amped up to maximum impact.
Your jokes will now go up to 11. ;)
It has always been my belief that audiences get behind character driven stand up quicker and more passionately then they do the 'run of the mill' writer comedian.
So kids the simple lesson is this, never forget to add character and passion, look for it within yourselves and your topics. Add emotion to your sets and what you're saying.
As to how do you move up in stand up comedy? Who the hell knows in this crazy inmate run asylum business.
One thing for sure though, making yourself the best doesn't hurt a bit!
